Healthy gums form the foundation for healthy teeth. Peoria Dental Care provides periodontal care to help patients prevent, diagnose, and manage gum disease through every stage of life.
Periodontal disease is often associated with red, swollen, tender, or bleeding gums. It is also one of the leading reasons adults lose teeth. Research has shown connections between gum disease, inflammation, and overall health conditions, which is why gum health is an important part of complete dental care.
What Periodontal Care May Include
- Gum health evaluations and periodontal pocket measurements
- Deep teeth cleaning, also called scaling and root planing
- Antibacterial periodontal therapy when appropriate
- Bacterial saliva testing to better understand the cause of infection
- Topical rinses placed directly into gum pockets
- Individualized home care protocols and periodontal maintenance visits
Antibacterial Periodontal Therapy
Mechanical cleaning is important, but bacteria are a major cause of periodontal disease. In certain cases, saliva testing may help identify the specific bacterial infection so treatment can be more targeted. Topical rinses and home care protocols may be recommended to help reduce bacteria and discourage recolonization.
Pinhole® Gum Rejuvenation
For patients with gum recession, the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique may be discussed when appropriate. This suture-free and scalpel-free approach is designed to gently reposition gum tissue over exposed root surfaces through a small pinhole opening. The goal is to improve gum coverage, reduce exposure of the root structure, and support long-term dental health.

Questions Patients Often Ask
Is periodontal disease the same as gum disease?
Yes. Periodontal disease is the clinical term for gum disease affecting the tissues that support the teeth.
Can gum disease be treated with a regular cleaning?
Early gingivitis may improve with regular cleanings and home care, but more advanced periodontitis often requires deep cleaning, maintenance, and other periodontal support.
