Periodontal Care
At Peoria Dental Care, we truly care about your overall health and wellness. With this in mind, we offer complete dentistry to include the health of the whole body because a key to good overall health is good oral health. For many patients, good oral health starts with maintaining healthy gums.
Your gums form a foundation for your teeth and hold them in place. Healthy gums provide protection and support for your teeth. Our dental practice in Peoria, IL provides a full range of soft tissue management services to ensure you achieve and maintain good periodontal health through every stage of life.
What is Periodontal Disease?
Many people have this disease and don’t even know it! It is usually characterized by red, swollen, and bleeding gums. It is the number one reason for tooth loss. Research has shown links between periodontal disease and medical problems such as strokes, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and pregnancy risks. Other studies have shown that periodontal disease can shorten life expectancy by 7 to 10 years due to the Systemic Inflammation it causes.
Comprehensive Gum Disease Treatments
Treatment varies according to the severity of the disease. Early stages (gingivitis) can generally be corrected with regular six-month cleanings and using an antibacterial rinse. More advanced stages (periodontitis) usually require several treatments utilizing a combination of antibacterial rinses with ultrasonic cleaners, creating a predictable and comfortable treatment.
Research-based Antibacterial Periodontal Therapy
This type of therapy is based on the fact that the bacteria causes the disease and a mechanical cleaning alone will not cure the problem. We have the ability to do a bacterial saliva test in order to learn the specific disease cause and effectively treat that bacterial infection. The topical rinses are applied directly into gum pockets. Research has shown these treatments are incredibly effective for cases of acute periodontal infections. To deter bacteria from re-colonizing, individualized home care protocols are created for each patient.
Pinhole® Gum Rejuvenation
Invented and patented by John Chao, DDS, MADG, the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique is a suture-free, scalpel-free procedure for treating receding gums. As gum recession occurs, it exposes the root structure of a tooth. This can cause tooth decay and other problems along the gumline. Treating gum recession is important to lasting dental health.
This technique is virtually painless and is performed by inserting a small needle into a pinpoint hole made in the gums. Using specially designed instruments, the gum tissue is gently loosened and expanded to cover the exposed root structure. This procedure results in minimal bleeding and recovery time and provides natural-looking, long-lasting results.
Dr. Roberts and Dr. Wynn have both completed the courses through the Pinhole Academy. Both dentists have the skills and experience to successfully and safely complete this procedure.
